Acne

Why do I get pimples after shaving?

Concise answer

Shaving bumps may come from acne, ingrown hairs, follicle irritation or infection. Blade technique, close shaving, friction and product residue can contribute, but treatment depends on which process is present.

Curved or coarse hairs can re-enter the skin and create inflamed bumps that resemble acne.

Repeated passes with a dull blade and heavily fragranced aftershave may add irritation without addressing the cause.

When evaluation may help

Assessment may help for painful, pus-filled, recurrent or scarring bumps and when the beard area develops dark marks after each shave.
